Dr. Modupẹ Martha-Alice Ladipọ nee Abayomi

Dr Modupẹ Martha-Alice Ladipọ nee Abayomi MBBS (Ibadan), MscBioEthics (Ib), FMCGP (Nig.), FWACP (FM) was born in Ibadan in 1954, the second daughter of Mr Emmanuel Akinola Abayomi (Nigerian) and Mrs Margot Lutzi Abayomi (German). 

She grew up in Ibadan and Lagos and qualified as a medical doctor in 1977 from the prestigious University of Ibadan. Dr Modupẹ Ladipọ has been practising General Medical Practice / Family Medicine since 1980. She was one of the pioneer trainees/residents in this specialty in Nigeria. 

As a Fellow of both the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) and the West African College of Physicians (WACP), she has been a qualified specialist Family Physician for over 30 years. 

For 15 years, from 1996 to 2011, she headed the General Medical Practice / Family Medicine Department of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, which is the foremost teaching hospital in Nigeria bringing the Department to international standards also training Postgraduate Residents in Family Medicine. 

Dr Modupe Ladipo had tirelessly worked towards incorporating family medicine into the Undergraduate Medical Curriculum and this came to fruition in the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan in 2015. 

She is now a Senior Lecturer in the Family Medicine Unit of the Department of Community Medicine of that University. As a specialist Family Physician in Nigeria, Dr Ladipọ’s scope of clinical practice covers the preventive, curative and promotive aspects of health care in the context of the individual’s family dynamics and the psychosocial and cultural milieu. She was also actively involved with hospital policy formulation and guidelines for managing People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and was involved in research, advocacy and knowledge dissemination of HIV/AIDS. She also has a Masters in Bio-Ethics. 

Dr Ladipọ belongs to a number of national and international professional bodies, including the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON) of which she was a foundation member and secretary, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA). She has participated, especially as a resource person, in numerous conferences, seminars and training workshops (for trainees and trainers) in the West African, Southern Africa sub-regions. 

Dr Ladipo has beena member of the Board of the NO Idowu Comprehensive Health Centre since its re-establishment. Dr Modupẹ Ladipọ’s extra-curricular activities and interests include fine art, farming and she is the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Field Society involved with the flora, fauna and cultural aspects of Nigeria. She is widely travelled.
